Stellar Data Recovery Review
Overview
Stellar Data Recovery will recover lost or deleted data from your computer or external hard drive. It has an attractive interface, easy to use and capable of recovering more data than many of its competitors. This is largely due to your careful and thorough checks, which are significantly slower than other recovery tools.
There are versions for Windows and Mac and a large number of plans. I would prefer to see this simplified.
For Windows:
- Stellar Data Recovery for Windows free: free, with the same features as the Standard version, but limited to 1 GB of recoverable files
- Stellar Data Recovery para Windows Standard: R$ 243,68/something, recovers deleted files from drives with common Windows and FAT formats
- Stellar Data Recovery para Windows Professional: R$ 389,92/item, adds support for lost partitions, non-bootable system drives, optical media, Disk imaging and SMART monitoring
- Stellar Data Recovery para Windows Premium: R$ 487,41/something, adds repair of corrupted videos and photos and extraction of thumbnails
- Stellar Data Recovery para Windows Technician: R$ 970,05/item, adds support for RAID
- Stellar Data Recovery para Windows Toolkit: R$ 1457,51/something, adds support for virtual drives and Mac and Linux formats
For Mac:
- Stellar Data Recovery for Mac Free: free, recovers deleted files from any storage media formatted with a regular Mac format or FAT, even if it has been formatted, recovery is limited to 1 GB
- Stellar Data Recovery para Mac Professional: R$ 389,92/item, adds support for non-booting system drives, lost partitions, optical media, Disk imaging and SMART monitoring
- Stellar Data Recovery para Mac Premium: R$ 487,41/something, adds repair of corrupted videos and photos and extraction of thumbnails
- Stellar Data Recovery for Mac Technician: R$ 726,32/something, same as the Premium plan, but supports three installations instead of one
Unfortunately, the comparison table on the official website doesn't make it clear what these prices are or for a one-year subscription. You don't find out until you buy the software.
A free trial will show you whether your files can be recovered before you have to pay. In this review, we will consider the Professional plan for Windows and Mac. This offers the recovery features most users will need.
Stellar Data Recovery is very good and has a high customer satisfaction rating. It's easy to use, but in many scenarios it recovers as much data as more advanced tools. However, its scans may require more time than other programs.
Recovery Features
How data recovery is possible? When a file is deleted, it is not removed from the directory or folder that lists your files, nor is your data removed from the drive. It is simply marked as deleted.
But recovery is not guaranteed. With time, as you create new files, the directory entry and data are likely to be overwritten.
Data recovery methods offered:
- Recover data: scans storage media to recover lost data
- Recovery deleted: recovers deleted data from volumes
- Raw recovery: recovers data from severely corrupted storage media
Supported storage media: internal hard drives and SSDs, USB storage media and SD cards, jump drives and RAW partitions. Mac version supports Fusion and Time Machine drives.
Disclaimer: it is difficult to recover data from solid state drives (SSDs). The TRIM technology that increases your efficiency also makes it impossible to recover your files after emptying the recycle bin.
Supported file systems:
- All plans for Windows: Windows formats like NTFS, exFAT, FAT(FAT16/FAT32)
- Professional Toolkit Plans for Windows: CD, DVD, HDDVD, discos Blu-ray
- Technical and toolkit plans for Windows: RAID 0, 5 e 6
- Windows Toolkit Plan: Linux and Mac formats, like HFS, HFS+, ext2, ext3, ext4, butno the new APFS
- All Mac plans: Mac and Windows formats like APFS, HFS+, NTFS, ex-FAT, FAT(FAT16/FAT32)
- All paid plans for Mac: CD, DVD, HDDVD, discos Blu-ray
Supported file types: hundreds of file formats, including photos, videos, documents and much more.
Additional features
Stellar Data Recovery offers several additional features:
- Pause and resume
- Saving scans for later recovery
- Sorting and searching the located files to narrow the results to a more manageable number
- Viewing localized files
- BitLocker to store deleted files for guaranteed recovery
- Bootable recovery drive (professional and higher plan)
- Disk Image (professional and higher plan)
- SMART monitoring for early warning of hard drive failures (professional and higher plan)
- Professional data recovery service by mail
However, lacks some features offered by some other recovery apps:
- File replacement (secure deletion)
- Defragmentation
- Deleting Duplicates and Other Cleanup Features
User experience
Stellar Data Recovery is easy to install and use. I tested more than a dozen data recovery applications and found, by far, one of the easiest programs to use.
Only three steps are needed to recover your data:
- Choose the types of files you want to recover. Selecting fewer options will make scanning faster.
- Choose the drive you want to scan.
- Select the files you want to restore and click Recover.
Consumer reviews and customer satisfaction are very high. For example, was awarded with 4,6 stars on G2 [1], 4,6 stars on Trustpilot [2] e 4,3 stars on Capterra [3].
Performance
Scanning for lost files can be time-consuming. How fast is Stellar Data Recovery? To find out, I copied a folder containing 10 files to an empty USB stick 4 GB, I deleted it and checked the drive with several data recovery applications.
- NoWindows, the Stellar Data Recovery scan took47 minutes and 25 seconds. This is slower than any other app I've tested. Many of them took between four and six minutes. The second slowest app took a long time 14 minutes.
- NoMac, it was much faster, just taking timeeight minutes. Several other apps were twice as fast, but two were slower, taking nine and ten minutes.
My tests were done on a relatively small USB flash drive. When checking a large hard drive, the verification time will be significantly longer: many hours and possibly days.
If quick checks are your priority, This is not the app for you and I will recommend some alternatives below. However, found that slower scans find more recoverable files than most competitors.
Efficiency
Data recovery can never be guaranteed. How successful was Stellar Data Recovery in recovering data in industry tests?
In my own testing on Windows and Mac, the program managed to recover all ten deleted files, including PDFs, a Word document and MP3s. The same happened with most of the other apps I tested. Recovering recently deleted files is something most data recovery apps do well.
Scans didn't find just the ten files I just deleted, but many others that had previously been excluded. In my experience, Stellar Data Recovery finds more recoverable files than many of its competitors.
Another reviewer performed several data recovery tests on the software.[4] Your first test was similar to mine and 100% Successful. In second place, it scanned your Mac's internal drive to see what types of files were located, and most of the supported file types listed on the official website were found. He is very pleased with the results of his tests.
DigiLab Inc performed a series of toughest recovery tests on five leading Windows data recovery applications, incluindo Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery (a previous version of the application) [5]. Here are some of the tests they performed:
- Recovering deleted files that bypassed the recycle bin and were overwritten
- Recovering large deleted files
- Recovering data from a damaged file system
- Recovering from a reformatted FAT32 drive
- Recovering a deleted partition
For many (but not all) of the tests, Stellar performed as well as R-Studio, a leading application for data recovery experts. Many of Stellar's scans were significantly slower, but not all. In some scans, Stellar scanned as fast as R-Studio and faster than the rest of the competition.
The difference is that Stellar Data Recovery is easy to use, but R-Studio has a pretty steep learning curve. For most users, I recommend the Stellar product, although advanced users may get better results with R-Studio.
Customer support
To page Stellar Self Help & Support [6] provides a searchable knowledge base and frequently asked questions. Support can be contacted via an online ticket system.
Common questions
Stellar Data Recovery is safe?
Yes. A Malwarebytes scan did not find any malware on the Mac version. Using the program will not erase or overwrite any of your data. Customer satisfaction is high and the company has been in business for over two decades.
Stellar Data Recovery is (really) free?
Sim, as long as your recovery needs are modest. The free version seriously limits the amount of data that can be recovered.
How much data can Stellar Data Recovery Free recover?
Stellar Data Recovery Free (versions for Windows and Mac) will recover until 1 GB of data. In many data recovery scenarios this will not be enough and you will have to pay for one of Stellar's many plans.
Alternatives
If Stellar Data Recovery isn't right for you, Here are some alternatives I recommend.
EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard
Data Recovery offers an easy-to-use wizard that will scan your drive for lost files. Scans are often much faster than Stellar. It is available for Windows and Mac.
Professional Recuva
Recuva is Windows-only recovery software from the developers of CCleaner. The free version is much more generous than Stellar and will meet the needs of many users.
Conclusion
I recommend Stellar Data Recovery, especially if recovering your most lost files is more important to you than the time it takes. It's easy to use, has a high customer satisfaction rating and probably retrieves more data than similar applications.
However, In so many cases, their checks are quite slow. Two alternatives that offer quick checks, as well as an easy-to-use interface and similar recovery success, are the EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard (Windows e Mac) and the Recuva Professional (Windows only).
Finally, an application consistently recovers more files than its competitors across a wide variety of data recovery scenarios, but it's not particularly easy to use. R-Studio is designed for data recovery experts and, if you consider yourself an advanced computer user, try it.
Análise Stellar Photo Recovery
At first sight, The photo recovery software looks like a modern, well-designed program that pays attention to the user interface. There are some simple options that cover the main functions of the program and useful tips that explain each option when you hover your cursor over each button.
Things start to get a little more confusing when you start working with the software. In the list of units shown below, the differentiation between Local Disk and Physical Disk indicates the type of scan that will be performed – one based on the existing file structure (Disco Local) or a sector-by-sector scan of the drive (Physicist). Disco) – although it is not immediately clear which is which.
This confusion is compounded by the fact that Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery seems to think I have a hard drive (untitled) of 750 GB, as listed in the Physical Disk section - but I don't have one installed and have never had a drive of this particular size.
Even more surprising is that it allowed me to scan the mysterious drive and found images that I know belong to me.! I built this computer myself and I know there is no such drive installed, but there is a photo I took of a horned grebe in the scan results.
This isn't exactly the best start, but let's go through the testing process to see how it works during recovery operations on real storage media.
Test results
Fortunately for me and my data, I'm generally very careful when dealing with file storage and backups. It was a hard lesson for me to appreciate the value of backups, But you only let something like that happen to you once.
Therefore, to replicate some of the scenarios in which you would want to use Photo Recovery, I combined three different tests:
- A half-full, previously formatted camera memory card;
- A folder full of media that was deleted from an external USB thumb drive;
- And a similar folder was deleted from my computer's internal drive.
Test 1: camera memory card overwritten
Work with many different memory cards, but similar in appearance, it can make it easier to accidentally reformat and start recording with the wrong card. This is the toughest test of data recovery software, because it requires more research than just supposedly empty storage space.
I used a memory card 8 GB from my old Nikon D80 DSLR which contained 427 Photos, using about half of the available storage space. Before this last round of use, the card was filled with photos that I transferred to my computer and was then reformatted using the camera's on-screen menus.
Just place the card in my Kingston card reader and Stellar Photo Recovery identifies it and presents me with the option to start scanning.
Stellar Photo Recovery managed to find a total of 850 files, although this counts the 427 that should currently be on the card. Scanning the supposedly empty storage space found the 423 remaining files, some of which were from late last year. It appears that any storage space that was overwritten with new photos could have older data extracted, although more powerful recovery software can do this.
One problem I discovered when sorting the scan results was that there was no way to select multiple files at once, although I could restore everything to the card by selecting the entire folder on the left. If I wanted to restore just 300 of the 423 deleted files, you would have to select each one individually, which would quickly become annoying.
Until now, things looked good. He scanned my media, found files that could be recovered and the recovery process was relatively quick. Although, things started going wrong as soon as I opened the folder where I saved the recovered files. I selected only a few .NEF files (Nikon-specific RAW image files) to test the recovery process and here is what I found in the destination folder:
Whenever I take photos with my DSLR, shooting in RAW mode. As most photographers know, RAW files are a direct dump of digital information from the camera sensor and allow for much more flexibility in the editing process when compared to shooting in JPEG.
As a result, I never take a photographer without JPEG mode, but the folder contained more JPEG files than RAW files. No JPEG files were listed in the scanning and recovery process, but they appeared in the folder. Possibly, I realized that Stellar Photo Recovery was actually extracting the JPEG preview files that are embedded in the NEF files, although I have no use for them and they are normally inaccessible.
Despite being able to accurately determine the Nikon-specific RAW format during the scanning process, none of the recovered files were usable. When trying to open the recovered NEF files, Photoshop displayed an error message and did not continue.
JPEG files also could not be opened with Windows Photo Viewer.
When I tried to open the JPEG files in Photoshop, they still didn't work.
Needless to say, this was a rather disappointing result, even for someone like me, who knows that data recovery can be an emotional rollercoaster. Happily, This is just a test and I was in no real danger of losing my data, so I was able to approach the situation with a calm mind and do a little research to find out what could be causing these problems.
After searching a bit on the Stellar website, I discovered that it is possible to teach software how to recognize new file types, showing you enough working examples. Although it seemed to have no problem recognizing my Nikon-specific RAW files during the scanning phase, I decided to give it a try and see if it would help..
This process is handled in the Preferences section of the program and has some options.
If you are a dedicated data recovery technician, you can use the ‘I know how to add header’ section, but I couldn't understand.
Instead, I decided to use the “I don’t know” option and provided 10 files. different functional NEF to see what would happen, I estimated the average file size and clicked “Add header”.
I chose “Add new header anyway”.
I went to check the list of file formats and, for some reason, I don't understand, all file types that were built into the software listed “exact size”, despite the fact that none of them would ever have a fixed size. Maybe it's some nuance in the software that I don't understand, or perhaps an error because my added NEF entry was in the list with the average file size I had specified instead of the “exact size”.
I ran the scanning process on the same memory card again, except I started using the drive list instead of the autoplay scan option. This change was necessary so that I could access the Advanced Settings section to configure it to only search for files with the type I just created. Strangely, this time the verification took longer, even though I'm only looking for a single file type, but this may have been due to the custom file type check I added.
Unfortunately, this was no more successful than the previous attempt. They were presented 423 files 32 KB each – the right number of files identified during my first scan, but the file size was too small and consistent to be correct.
But after the surprising results of the first recovery attempt, it was worth testing to see what the software would actually produce on Windows when I got them back. Equally surprising, the output turned out to be exactly what was shown in the scan results, but none of the files were usable and gave the same error message in Photoshop as before.
To be more complete, I went back and did the same steps again, but this time choosing the Local Disk entry for the memory card instead of the Removable Disk entry. For some reason, this gave me a slightly different scanning process. This time it correctly identified the files on the memory card, as you will notice the difference between the two screenshots in the ‘Items Found’ row.
Unfortunately, despite slightly different interface and boot method, this check was no more successful than the first. Instead, it simply found the same useless .NEF files as 32 KB from previous attempt, in addition to existing files.
No final, I am forced to conclude that Stellar Photo Recovery is not very good at restoring formatted memory cards.
Test 2: deleted folder on external USB drive
This test was comparatively simple. This pen drive 16 GB has been in use for some time and I added a test folder with some JPEG photos, some NEF RAW image files and some videos of my cat Juniper.
I “accidentally” deleted it and ran the same testing protocol as the first test. The drive detected correctly as soon as I plugged it in and made it easy to start the scan.
Everything seemed to work correctly and it found every single file I included in my test folder during the scan process – as well as several extra mystery NEF files.
Checking the results of the recovery process showed me a similar set of extracted JPEG previews in the NEF folder, although this time all files, except one, could be opened and read by Photoshop.
The video files worked correctly without any problems. In general, that's a very good success rate and infinitely better than the overwritten memory card test. Now let's go to the final test!
Test 3: deleted folder on internal drive
After USB flash drive test success, I had high hopes for the results of this final recovery process. Scanning the entire 500 GB searching for all file types is a slow process, even though I have a solid state drive which is essentially a high capacity flash drive. However, it is subject to a lot more random reads and writes, which can cause a situation closer to memory card test failure.
Unfortunately, although it is possible to check specific parts of the drive based on the sector number, there is no way to simply ask the program to check the most recently deleted files, so I had to check the entire unit. This generated a lot of useless results, like images from around the web that were in my temporary internet files and are regularly deleted without my input.
This scanning method also does not provide an estimated completion time, although this could simply be due to this drive being the largest I have scanned.
Sorting the results took some time, but I finally managed to find the files I wanted to save using the ‘Lost Folders’ area of the ‘Excluded List’ section. All the files I deleted were listed, but none of them could be recovered properly. Strangely, some of the JPEG files appeared to have been replaced with other files from my temporary Internet files.
After a second unsuccessful test, I am forced to conclude that Photo Recovery 7 is best used as a simple “recovery” function in an extremely limited set of circumstances, rather than as a complete data recovery solution.
Alternatives
For R$65.00, the Recuva Pro does everything the Stellar Photo Recovery can do – and much more. You are not restricted to just recovering media files and can deep scan your storage media for traces of files that have already been overwritten. You are not yet guaranteed success in your recovery, and the user interface definitely leaves a lot to be desired, but it's worth a look. There is also a slightly more limited free option that can recover your files!
Conclusion
If you are looking for a robust media recovery solution, Stellar Photo Recovery is not the best option available. If you are looking for a simple 'undelete' function’ which will allow you to restore files that you accidentally deleted from your external devices, then this software will do the job – as long as you prevent your device from recording any more data before you get a chance to use it.
It does not have a monitoring system that tracks your recently deleted files, which can make recovering just a few files a time-consuming process on large volumes. If you are only interested in working with small volumes of external storage, this is a quick and functional solution, but there are other recovery programs that offer more comprehensive features.
